«El ciclo de Hugo Moyano en Independiente está terminado» / Fútbol

Fabián Doman defines himself as «a rare case» of an Independiente fan. Is that his father was from Racing and he became Devil at age 6, on the advice of a stranger and the push of sympathy for the color red.

«My mother was a border teacher and we went to live with her and my grandmother in Clorinda, Formosa. There I met a man named Pedro Muñoz, who was a rapporteur in 1970. He told me ‘you have to become a fan of Independiente «My mother was from Boca, I followed soccer but I didn’t give her much ball. Pedro told me: ‘It’s Brandao’s team, it’s the one that plays the best, the best team on the continent. ‘ I swelled with Independiente. And I watched the games on black and white TV. After four or five months a sports magazine arrived at Clorinda and I saw that it was all red. I spent five months being an Independiente fan without knowing that he was wearing red. And I love red. When I saw the magazine I said ‘bye, I’m from Independiente’ «.

This is how this journalist remembers it, who at 57 years of age decided run for president of the club of his loves and will play at the polls in the December 19 elections representing the front Independent Unit, whose trinomial is completed with Néstor Grindetti (mayor of Lanús) as vice 1 ° and Juan Marconi (television host) as vice 2 and that he has Pro deputy Cristian Ritondo among his ranks.

The talks to shape his candidacy began a year ago. But initially, he says, «he went to the meetings supporting them (through Grindetti, Ritondo and the journalist Enrique Sacco) to be the candidates.» In April he was internally identified as the chosen one of this new space that «represents almost all Independent», as indicated in dialogue with Clarín.

«I never had the fantasy of being president of the club, although it is the dream of every fan always. I thought that the candidates were going to be others, but as soon as it was defined that I was going, I never doubted of the conviction I had. I consulted with my children, with my partner and with some friends. They told me from ‘you’re crazy’ to ‘go ahead’. In general, the one who stops me in the street tells me to go ahead, «he explains and gets excited:» I’m really looking forward to it, I’m out of the box. I would like to win and join the club now to do many things. «

-Did you go to the court a lot as a kid?

-The first time I went to the court I was 12 years old. I started, like everyone else, in the popular visor. I was lucky to see part of the 70’s, wonderful, unique. Hopefully we can repeat it sometime. Look, in 1979 we won the second consecutive National Championship, the first was the epic in Córdoba. The following year, in January, the 78 final was played with River. We tied 0-0 at the Monumental, River hit us a dance and the Chocolate Baley took everything out. On the return leg, Fillol was a beast, but we won 2-0 with two from Bochini. That night I returned to my house in Caballito walking from Avellaneda. When you are a champion you walk a whole day. Was 14 years old. Once I remember that I went to the Hurricane field, a game that the referee pumped us. I ran out of money for the group. I went up to 91 and told the bus operator the truth: «Look, I don’t have money, I came to see Independiente, the referee stole from us and we lost 3 to 1». And the bus driver let me get on. I’ve been everywhere. I went from the popular crowd to the lower stalls, there I saw one of the most spectacular games of my life, but we lost it with Racing de Córdoba, I think it was at Nacional 80, a 4-3. Then I had a middle audience, Erico box. I saw the first classic on the Racing court with Racing fans. We won 2 to 1 with a goal from Bertoni from a free kick. It was against the bow of the Imperial Guard. An afternoon in which Bochini, of course, played like the gods.

-What place does Independiente occupy in your life?

-Those who know me can’t stand me. I’m unbearable. And I suffer a lot. On top of that we always play Fridays and Saturdays and if you don’t win, it ruins the whole weekend for you. I am sad. I tell the little ones that this was not the case. When I went to primary school, being a fan of Independiente was something else, it gave you another status. We were playing something else at that time.

-Why did the club get so far away from those times?

-The last great presidency was that of Pedro Iso. There were a lot of factors: the economic crises, the decline, the stadium construction that I I would have made her more humbleThat the fan wants to be a champion and any player is hired, the lack of continuity in the projects, the lack of projects … It is a sum of things. There is a leadership that did not know how to solve a lot of problems.

-What did Moyano fail in?

-He had a good first presidency. Then he was wrong about everything. I don’t know what happened to him between the first and the second presidency. She would have to ask him. It looks like another person. I do not rescue anything from the last years. Independent ruined a guy like Holan. We still don’t know what happened to those purchases from the first part of 2018. We don’t know what the Beccacece-era purchases were like. It is a mystery that we want you to tell us. Decisions were made to bring players at prices that did not correspond and that were not up to par. And it wasn’t one or two; they were a lot. Today the club’s situation is very bad financially, economically, culturally, socially, and institutionally. Not in football because the team is in the South American and has a chance to enter the Libertadores. The squad has made a great effort without reinforcements due to the inhibitions in FIFA, a very serious issue. Falcioni made an enormous effort.

-What did you like about that first Moyano administration?

-The arrangement they did in the club. They received a post-relegation club with a lot of complications in all orders. With the bar … Everything exploded. It is true that we were newly promoted and the bar was low. But that Board of Directors was a different group, people who were not close to Hugo and now many of them are with us. They are Daniel Seoane, Cristian Ritondo, Carlos Montaña, among others. Valuable people.

-Would you have a coffee with Moyano?

-I would have coffee with everyone. By Independent, with whoever. Of course, without a doubt. If I say that Hugo has to get off, it sounds like I’m pressuring him and nothing is further from that. But I believe that the cycle by Hugo Moyano on Independiente it’s finished. I have nothing personal against Hugo, Yo-yo Maldonado or Pablo Moyano. I am talking about what Independiente is, not what Hugo Moyano is as a truck driver unionist; it is not appropriate that I think of that. I have nothing personal against them, but I think the opposite to them. We are on opposite paths.

– Not long ago he said that when it was said that he was running, some went down and when he began to question his application they went back up. Did he say it for you?

-And added something else, said that eggs were missing. I think he said it for me and here we are. Leftover eggs, what is lacking is management.

-How do you relate to politics? On the list are political actors at the national level.

I am neither Kirchnerist nor anti Kirchnerist. I do have a very clear ideology, I was press officer for the UCeDe campaign in 1989. It is clear that I have a liberal identity but it does not translate into any party identification. I do not belong to any political party. Hugo Moyano in his eight years of management never peronized (sic) Independent, though he did unionize it and made us lose our red identity for the green one. But we never peronized. And I’m not going to make the club or Cambiemos or Pro, or Peronist or anti-Peronist. Here national politics has nothing to do with it.

-Will your schedule and obligations allow you to dedicate the time required to Independiente?

-24 hours. In case the member chooses us, I will be working for the club 24 hours a day. This requires being there. You have to take care of the chlorine in the pool, to bring an 8, to hire the DT, to see if the tennis balls are useful, to see how the Wilde property is, Santo Domingo … Daniel Seoane will be the general secretary and Christian Urreli the treasurer and I already told you that this will be 24×7.

Doman’s ideas for …

-The delicate economic situation: «There is a very big problem that is the debts in FIFA. Independiente did not comply with the payment plans and it must be solved urgently to be able to incorporate in the transfer market. To begin with, they are 6,413,000 dollars and 350 thousand euros. This is the urgent thing. We are working to get the money. When I say bringing the elections forward, it is because a financial hole is generated, which is the time that elapses from when you take office on December 21 until you generate and receive new resources, put it at June. You have to sell the shirt well, sponsor the stadium, exploit more places from which to obtain resources. You need to have a six-month financial cushion to start taxiing. For this reason, if we win, I say that it is a transitional government. «

-The management of professional football: «On December 1, a working table should be convened in which all the candidates, the club’s lawyers, the treasurer, Falcioni and the Rolfi Montenegro. You have to ask Julio and the Rolfi what do they want to do and that can’t wait for december 21, By that date the preseason has to be defined. If Julio wants to continue, it will be decided by the Board of Directors by consensus. I have technicians in my head. There are two that people ask me a lot, I clarify that they are not Heinze or Crespo. I’m not going to give the names but they have to do with Independiente’s style. I am classic: four in the back, three steering wheels and three in the front. I am extremely unbearable with money and it is very difficult for you to make me buy some players that Independiente bought in recent years. «

Doman shows the report of the debts that Independiente accumulates. It is a very big problem and it is necessary to solve it, indicates. Photo: Lucia Merle

-Youth football: «It is the basis of everything. One can patch up the current situation but the exit will be the youth divisions. And in Independiente sometimes the kids reach First at a more advanced age than in other clubs. I was seeing the results of the Inferiors and I thought that in some categories we were better. You have to talk to those in charge and see how they were treated and if they charge. »

-The inside of the bar brava: «If you have three factions and you summon them all at the same time to give them the new cards, what happened to you recently near the headquarters will happen to you. The bars are there and we know who they are, or at least in which sectors they are located. One sector is sent by Juani and the other by Loquillo. I’m not going to get to settle that internal, it does not correspond to me. I am neither the Judiciary nor the Police. There are tasks that are theirs. What I am going to do is not allow any act of vandalism to take place in the club or its surroundings. I have to guarantee the partner that he can be at peace wherever he is. That is our responsibility. What happens outside is a problem for them and for the Judicial Power and the Police. I am not going to give tickets, or t-shirts, nor am I going to pay for anyone’s trip. Nor do I chase them. There is admission. They are partners and whoever is in order to enter, will enter as a partner. The policy of Independiente got a lot with the bars. They have used them and allowed themselves to be used. They did not do badly economically in that relationship with the leaders. There are leaders who ask the bars for things and when you ask something from a bar, it is a one-way route. «
